While data like in Figure 1 tend to get read as a life-cycle effect (“the older you get, the more conservative you get”), it seems more likely that it’s a generation effect (as in Figure 2: the views you’re socialized into early in life stick with you through the years). There may also be a period effect though, as in Figure 4 where Millennials and the Silent Generation both become more supportive of same-sex marriage over time, even though their relative position amongst the generations stays the same.
